More ED Information and Support

Over 30 million in the United States experience different degrees of ED (erectile dysfunction). And more than 70% of these ED cases are caused by physical conditions. These conditions include infections, diseases, injuries and medication side effects. Psychological factors may also contribute to the development of ED.

The table below depicts the most widely seen conditions and factors that are likely to cause ED. This list is not complete. If you want to learn more, click on a tab.

Possible Physical Causes of ED
High blood pressure (also called hypertension)
High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) usually damages the blood vessels, which reduces the effective blood flow. When there's not enough blood flowing into the penis getting a hard erection is quite problematic.
Diabetes (high blood sugar)
Diabetes may increase the likelihood of developing ED. Increased blood sugar can deteriorate blood vessels and nerves in the penile area.
High blood cholesterol
High blood cholesterol is known to narrow blood vessels over time. This in turn affects the blood inflow to the penis.
Nerve diseases
Men suffering from nervous diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis, have a high risk of developing ED. In such case nerve signals aren't properly transmitted to the penis and this results in the inability to have an erection.
Injuries or surgery to the pelvic area
Surgical intervention and injuries (especially on prostate and rectum) can damage nerves or blood vessels within the penis.
Low hormone levels
Decreased male hormone levels (such as testosterone) can negatively affect a man’s sex drive and ability of getting an erection. Those who have low or high thyroid hormone levels can also have ED.
ED as a possible side effect of medicine
Various medications may be the cause of ED as a side effect. Drugs that are likely to cause ED include:

  • Certain medications for treating high blood pressure, depression, or psychiatric conditions
  • Antihistamines

Make sure to inform your physician about all the drugs you consume, including herbal supplements. And never forget to discuss with your doctor about stopping any medication course.
Lifestyle factors
Various lifestyle factors may induce the likelihood of developing ED, such as:

  • Smoking
  • Excessive weight
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Lowered physically activity
  • Using street drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine, or heroin
